A North Dakota income tax credit is available for a taxpayer that makes a charitable contribution of > $5,000 to a qualified endowment fund(s) during a calendar year.  The tax credit is equal to 40% of the contribution and the maximum allowable credit for a tax year is $10,000.  The credit may not exceed the taxpayer’s income tax liability. Any unused credit may be carried forward for three taxable years. 

Donations to the Potholes and Prairies Foundation are deductible on your federal income tax return to the extent allowed by Internal Revenue Code Section 170.  

·        Individuals who do not itemize can deduct up to $1,000 ($2,000 if married filing jointly) in charitable cash contributions per year. 

·        For individuals who do itemize deductions, the charitable contribution deduction is generally limited to 60% of your adjusted gross income (AGI) for cash donations.  Starting in 2026, you can only deduct contributions that exceed 0.5% of your AGI.

We strongly recommend that you consult an accountant or tax advisor so that you fully understand how your planned donation will affect your state and federal income taxes.

Each year, approximately 5% of the Foundation’s invested funds are distributed back to the Chapter, providing a reliable source of support for programs, professional development, student opportunities, conservation initiatives, and other activities that advance the Chapter’s mission.
